The Democratic Progressive Party's (DPP) conspiracy to solicit U.S. support for Taiwan secession is doomed to failure, said Chen Binhua, spokesman for the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office, commenting Wednesday on Taiwan leader Lai Ching-te's "visit" next month to Paraguay, Guatemala, and Belize by transiting through the U.S. cities of New York and Dallas.

"We firmly oppose any form of official interaction between the U.S. and the Taiwan region of China and resolutely oppose Lai Ching-te's transiting through U.S. under any context or in any form. The U.S. side should abide by the one-China principle and the provisions of the three China-U.S. joint communiques, handle the Taiwan question with utmost caution and stop sending any wrong signal to the separatist forces for Taiwan secession. We would like to make it clear to Lai Ching-te authorities: soliciting U.S. support for Taiwan secession is all in vain and doomed to failure," said Chen at a press conference in Beijing.

Regarding the reports that two Japanese firms have recently withdrawn their investments from a well-known Taiwanese department store chain, Chen stated that the tensions in the Taiwan Strait will inevitably impact investors’ confidence in the Taiwan region.

"The DPP authorities continue to seek Taiwan secession through soliciting foreign support and military buildup, undermine peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait, escalate tensions and push the Taiwan region into a dangerous situation fraught with the threat of war, which will inevitably harm the region's economic development prospects and affect foreign investors' confidence in the Taiwan market," said Chen.

South Korean President Lee Jae Myung said on Wednesday that Seoul firmly adheres to the one-China principle, in comments made ahead of his upcoming state visit to China.

The remarks were made in an interview with China Media Group (CMG). The visit is scheduled for Jan 4–7.

"The consensus reached between governments of the Republic of Korea and China when diplomatic relations were established continues to be the fundamental principle governing our relations, and its effectiveness remains steadfast. I want to clearly state that the ROK has always adhered to the one-China principle. Maintaining peace and stability in regional matters, including in Northeast Asia and concerning the Taiwan issue, holds significant importance to us," said Lee.

"The foundational relationship between the ROK and China was established on a very principled and fundamental basis from the beginning. It is clear that the ROK government has always adhered to this position and has never wavered from it. I believe that the sound development of ROK-China relations depends on both sides fully respecting each other's core interests and being mutually tolerant of each other's positions. In this context, we will, as always, uphold the one-China principle as the Taiwan issue is China's most fundamental concern," he said.
