China's logistics cost was reduced in the past year as the country continues to optimize the transport structure, Minister of Transport Liu Wei said at a press conference Monday in Beijing.
"In 2024, an average of about 180 million people traveled across regions in the country, 160 million tons of goods were transported, and 478 million express parcels were delivered every day," Liu told reporters.
The operational mileage of urban rail transit reached about 11,000 kilometers, ranking the first in the world. The total length of urban bus lines reached 1.75 million kilometers, marking an increase of 48.5 percent and 18.3 percent, respectively, compared with 2020, he said.
Liu said the cost of transportation decreased in 2024 despite the growth of transportation volume.
"We are deepening the adjustment of transport structure. The railway and waterway cargo turnovers increased by 17.5 percent and 33.6 percent, respectively, compared with 2020. The average annual growth rate of containers sent through rail-water transport channels reached 15 percent. In 2024, the total social logistics cost savings exceeded 400 billion yuan (about 55.7 U.S. dollars), of which transportation costs was reduced by about 280 billion yuan," Liu said.
