China is ready to work with the European Union (EU) to further strengthen the central role of the United Nations in the international system, a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman said on Monday, in response to a media query about the relevant remarks made by EU officials regarding China.
"U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has proposed a reform initiative for the 80th anniversary of the United Nations. China takes this seriously. We support the U.N. in adapting to new situations and new tasks, further consolidating commitments made by all parties to multilateralism, improving its operational efficiency through reform, enhancing its capacity to address global challenges, and playing a better role in international affairs," said Guo Jiakun, the spokesman, at a press conference in Beijing.
"Any reform in this regard should be sufficiently based on consultation and attachment of importance to the opinions of member states, especially those of developing countries, to build a more just and equitable global governance system. China and the EU, as two major civilizations and players, both support multilateralism and open cooperation, as well as the central role of the United Nations and democracy in international relations. China is willing to work with the EU to take the 80th anniversary of the United Nations as an opportunity to further strengthen its central status and to effectively play its due role, injecting confidence and strength into multilateralism," he said.
