China's Permanent Representative to the United Nations Fu Cong on Tuesday called on the international community to revitalize multilateralism to maintain international peace and security.

Fu made the appeal at a UN Security Council open debate on promoting international peace and security through multilateralism and peaceful settlement of disputes.

The Chinese envoy put forward a four-point proposal in this regard.

Countries must respect each other's national sovereignty and territorial integrity, take seriously each other's legitimate security concerns, resolve differences through mutual understanding and accommodation, and move toward greater consensus through dialogue and engagement, he said.

The UN Charter is the bedrock of the international order, and it is not an a la carte menu. The international community should abandon the law of the jungle, adhere to sovereign equality, non-interference in internal affairs, peaceful settlement of disputes, and safeguard fairness and justice, said Fu.

The UN Security Council shoulders the primary responsibility for maintaining international peace and security, and council members should rise above self-interests, prioritize the common good, abandon geopolitical calculations, and seek unity and cooperation, said Fu.

Most countries of the Global South have suffered invasion, colonization and plunder, and thus deeply understand the value of peace, Fu said, adding that they represent a stabilizing, constructive and progressive force amid the tectonic changes in the world, he said.

The Chinese envoy urged support for regional organizations such as the African Union, the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, and the Arab League in deepening their partnerships with the United Nations and playing leading roles in resolving regional conflicts.

"The world today is full of turmoils, and the road to peace is not an easy one. China is willing to work with all parties to practice true multilateralism, to always be a builder of world peace, a contributor to global development, and a defender of the international order, so as to promote the building of a community with a shared future for mankind and create a better future for mankind," said Fu.

South Korean President Lee Jae Myung said on Wednesday that Seoul firmly adheres to the one-China principle, in comments made ahead of his upcoming state visit to China.

The remarks were made in an interview with China Media Group (CMG). The visit is scheduled for Jan 4–7.

"The consensus reached between governments of the Republic of Korea and China when diplomatic relations were established continues to be the fundamental principle governing our relations, and its effectiveness remains steadfast. I want to clearly state that the ROK has always adhered to the one-China principle. Maintaining peace and stability in regional matters, including in Northeast Asia and concerning the Taiwan issue, holds significant importance to us," said Lee.

"The foundational relationship between the ROK and China was established on a very principled and fundamental basis from the beginning. It is clear that the ROK government has always adhered to this position and has never wavered from it. I believe that the sound development of ROK-China relations depends on both sides fully respecting each other's core interests and being mutually tolerant of each other's positions. In this context, we will, as always, uphold the one-China principle as the Taiwan issue is China's most fundamental concern," he said.
