A Chinese envoy on Monday called for all relevant parties in Syria to make joint efforts in achieving peace, stability, and development in the conflict-battered country through a political solution
Fu Cong, China's permanent representative to the United Nations, urged all parties concerned to proceed from the fundamental interests of the Syrian people and find a political solution to restore stability and socio-economic development in Syria at a UN Security Council meeting held at UN headquarters.
"The only way to resolve the Syrian crisis is to carry out a Syrian-led, inclusive political process, which requires a political solution to the conflict and the protection of the rights of all Syrian people. These principles remain of great guiding significance under the current circumstances. The Syrian interim authorities should actively promote an inclusive political transition and address the concerns of all parties through broad dialogue. The UN should play an active role in this process," said the envoy.
Pointing out the situation in Syria remains complex and fragile, facing multiple challenges, Fu said a broad and inclusive political transition should be promoted and utmost efforts should be made to combat terrorist forces and effectively alleviate the humanitarian situation.
Fu stated that any appeasement or connivance of terrorism will inevitably bring profound suffering to Syria and its people, adding that China urges the Syrian interim authorities to fulfill their counter terrorism obligations in earnest and combat all terrorist organizations designated by the Security Council, including the East Turkestan Islamic Movement.
Fu also condemned Israel's attacks on Syria and called for respect for the country's sovereignty and territorial integrity.
During the meeting, UN Special Envoy for Syria Geir Pedersen expressed concern about credible reports of widespread violations and abuses in Sweida, including summary executions and arbitrary killings, kidnappings, destruction of private property and looting of homes.
The conflict in Sweida had crippled the healthcare system and destroyed infrastructure, leading to severe shortages of food, water, and electricity, Edem Wosornu, director of Operations and Advocacy at the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, told the UN Security Council.
She called on all parties to comply with international humanitarian law and ensure unimpeded humanitarian access.
