Daily output of China's largest ultra-deep oil, gas area hits milestone

China's largest ultra-deep oilfield in the heart of Taklimakan Desert in northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region has produced over 10,000 tonnes gas and oil in a single day, marking a new phase of oilfield output for wells deeper than 8,000 meters, its operator said on Tuesday.

The Fuman oilfield boasts more than 1 billion tonnes of oil and gas resources, which are mainly detected underground at 7,500 meters to 10,000 meters deep, according to the China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC).

The breakthrough came after the successful operation of the Manshen 72-H2 well in the oil and gas-bearing area of Fuman Oilfield in Xinjiang's Shaya County. A total of 30 high-yield ultra-deep wells have so far been completed in the oil and gas-bearing area of Fuman Oilfield this year, driving up gas and oil output.

"The successful operation of these high-yield wells has laid a solid foundation for achieving 10,000 tons of daily production. Our deepest operational well has exceeded 9,000 meters, with most wells reaching over 8,000 meters, further proving the rich resource potential of Taklimakan Desert's ultra-deep layers," said Niu Ge, an engineer at Hade oil and gas field administration of Tarim Oilfield company, CNPC's subsidiary.

Taklimakan Desert is the largest desert in China and the second-largest drifting desert in the world located in the Tarim Basin, a major petroliferous basin in Xinjiang.

Over the years, Tarim Oilfield, China's largest ultra-deep oil and gas production base, in Xinjiang has continuously innovated geological theories for ultra-deep resource exploration, identifying 70 major faults rich in oil and gas.

These breakthroughs have enabled the drilling of over 300 ultra-deep wells. Most of the oil extracted from the wells is light crude, often accompanied by natural gas.

The Tarim Oilfield has achieved the full storage of oil and gas in the heart of the desert by building new processing facilities.

"Over the past two years, we've built pipelines along faults and constructed processing facilities spanning 200 kilometers. These facilities support an annual capacity of 5 million tons of oil and gas processing, enabling nearly 10,000 tons of crude oil to be produced and around 5 million cubic meters of natural gas to be recovered each day," said Wang Ziyu, Wang Ziyu, director of Production Operations Department, Hade oil and gas field administration of CNPC's Tarim Oilfield company.

To date, the Tarim Oilfield has developed 150 ultra-deep wells with each producing 10,000 tonnes of oil cumulatively, including 35 wells with each having a cumulative output of over 100,000 tonnes.

The U.S. State Department announced Wednesday that it is pausing immigrant visa processing from 75 countries.

The measure will apply to "countries whose migrants take welfare from the American people at unacceptable rates. The freeze will remain active until the U.S. can ensure that new immigrants will not extract wealth from the American people," the department said on X.

The pause impacts countries including Somalia, Haiti, Iran and Eritrea, "whose immigrants often become public charges on the United States upon arrival," said the State Department.

Earlier on Wednesday, the department announced in a memo that it would suspend visa processing for 75 countries, including Somalia, Russia, Afghanistan, Brazil, Iran, Iraq, Egypt, Nigeria, Thailand and Yemen, according to a Fox News report.

The pause will begin Jan. 21 and will continue indefinitely until the department conducts a reassessment of visa processing, the report said. The move came after the White House announced on Tuesday that it is ending temporary protected status for Somali immigrants amid fraud allegations in Minnesota.

On Monday, the State Department announced on social media that it had revoked over 100,000 visas since U.S. President Donald Trump took office nearly a year ago.

In November 2025, Trump announced his intention to permanently suspend immigration from what he described as "Third World countries", following the death of a National Guard member after being shot near the White House by an Afghan national.
