Chinese President Xi Jinping on Wednesday urged efforts to fully and thoroughly implement the Communist Party of China's (CPC) guidelines on the governance of Xizang in the new era, striving to build a modern socialist new Xizang that is united, prosperous, civilized, harmonious and beautiful.
Xi, also general secretary of the CPC Central Committee and chairman of the Central Military Commission, made the remarks when he was briefed in Lhasa on the work of the Party committee and government of southwest China's Xizang Autonomous Region.
Xi noted that since the establishment of the autonomous region 60 years ago, under the strong leadership of the CPC Central Committee and with the vigorous support of the people across the country, the Party committee and the government of the Xizang Autonomous Region have united and led people of all ethnic groups in the region to work hard and forge ahead.
They have adhered to and improved the system of regional ethnic autonomy, carried out in-depth fight against secession, and achieved remarkable economic and social development that has attracted worldwide attention, he said.
As a result, Xizang has undergone earthshaking transformation, as the region, together with all other regions across the country, completed the building of a moderately prosperous society in all respects as scheduled and has embarked on a new journey towards building a modern socialist country, Xi said. Xi stressed that to govern, stabilize and develop Xizang, the first step is to maintain political and social stability, ethnic unity, and amity among different religions.
Efforts should be made to develop a stronger sense of the Chinese nation as one community, actively build a national model area for ethnic unity and progress, guide Tibetan Buddhism in adapting to socialist society, and improve the institutions and mechanisms for social work, so as to better serve the people and consolidate the foundation of social governance, Xi said. Noting that the development in Xizang has its own characteristics, Xi urged efforts to promote high-quality development based on reality.
He said it's necessary to develop characteristic and advantageous industries on the plateau in accordance with local conditions, advance the construction of major projects in a vigorous, orderly and effective manner, enhance ecological conservation, pursue coordinated progress in new urbanization and all-around rural revitalization, and consolidate and build on achievements in poverty alleviation, thus elevating people's sense of gain, happiness and security.
Efforts should also be made to continue the post-disaster reconstruction in Dingri County, Xi said.
To ensure that Xizang continues to achieve successful development, the region should be always committed to the Party's leadership, and step up Party building, Xi said. Wang Huning, chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference and head of the central delegation, Cai Qi, director of the General Office of the CPC Central Committee, and other officials attended the meeting. Both Wang and Cai are members of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee.
