A Chinese envoy to the United Nations on Thursday called for concerted effort among all parties in Syria to maintain stability and avoid new conflicts, while emphasizing the necessity to combat the increasingly active terrorist activities in the country.

Speaking at a Security Council meeting on Syria's political and humanitarian issues, China's permanent representative to the UN Fu Cong said that China supports Syria in advancing an inclusive political transition process. He noted that all parties in Syria should work together to maintain stability and prevent the onset of new conflicts.

Fu also expressed concern over the escalating terrorist activities in the country.

"Continuing to show tolerance towards terrorists will only bring greater harm to Syria and other countries in the region. We urge the Syrian interim authorities to take strong measures to decisively combat all terrorist organizations listed by the Security Council, including the 'East Turkestan Islamic Movement,' or the 'Turkistan Islamic Party.' It must be pointed out that the purpose of the Security Council's sanctions measures related to Syria is to combat extremist terrorist forces and safeguard peace and security in Syria and the region," Fu said.

On the adjustment of the Security Council's sanctions concerning Syria, Fu said that the Council should make prudent decisions based on comprehensive considerations. These should include the current counterterrorism and security situation in Syria, the capabilities of the Syrian interim authorities, and the potential impacts of any adjustments. The aim should be to prevent terrorist forces entrenched in Syria from expanding their influence.

UN Special Envoy for Syria Geir Pedersen and UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs Tom Fletcher also briefed the attendees on the situation in Syria, underscoring that while the conflict in southern Syria's Sweida province has temporarily calmed down due to a ceasefire, the overall situation remains fragile.
