Preparations for the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Summit 2025 have been fully completed, according to a press conference held Friday in Tianjin Municipality, the host city for the event.

The SCO Summit 2025 will be held from August 31 to September 1, with leaders from more than 20 countries and heads of 10 international organizations set to attend.

According to officials speaking at the press conference, Tianjin has upgraded the main venue and arranged comprehensive support in reception, accommodation, transportation, catering, medical services and translation, with a total of 998 student volunteers selected to assist the running of the summit.

"From bilateral meetings and arrivals at transport hubs to hotel reception, the news center and city transportation, we have worked meticulously on atmosphere creation and venue arrangements. We are confident that with the concerted efforts of the entire city, the summit will be a success that embodies the Shanghai Spirit, showcases China's style, and highlights Tianjin's unique character," said Wang Xu, Executive Deputy Mayor of Tianjin.

Officials at the press conference also highlighted the city's growing cooperation with SCO member states. From January to July this year, Tianjin's trade with SCO countries reached 53.37 billion yuan (about 7.46 billion U.S. dollars), up 5.2 percent year on year.

Over the past decade, the city has pioneered the "Luban Workshop" program for vocational education partnerships, with 10 facilities already established in eight SCO countries, including Russia, Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan.

"We have launched 21 cooperative programs across six major fields, including energy and power, equipment manufacturing, electronic information, transportation, environmental resources, and business and trade. These programs have cultivated large numbers of technical professionals for the development of manufacturing, new energy, artificial intelligence and the digital economy in various countries. Looking ahead, we will continue to deepen vocational education exchanges and cooperation with SCO member states, contributing educational strength to building a closer SCO community with a shared future," said Jing Hongyang, head of Tianjin's Education Commission.

Tianjin has also worked with SCO partners in areas such as smart cities, industrial digital transformation and cross-border e-commerce, taking advantage of the city's position as a national leader in computing power. In total, the city's intelligent computing capacity exceeds 10,000 petaflops, and supercomputing accounts for 20 percent of China's total.

"Next, Tianjin will take the SCO summit as an opportunity to promote long-term cooperation with SCO member states in the digital economy. We aim to foster a multi-level cooperative ecosystem among cities, industries, universities and think tanks, and to help drive high-quality digital economy development across SCO countries," said Deng Guanghua, head of Tianjin Data Bureau.

The multilateral system is "under attack" amid global turmoil, President of the 80th UN General Assembly Annalena Baerbock warned in her remarks on Wednesday.

In her briefing on the priorities for the resumed 80th Session of the General Assembly, the UNGA president noted that the current multilateral system does not collapse all in a sudden, but "crumbles piece by piece" in divisions, compromises, and lack of political commitment.

The president called all the UN member states to defend the UN Charter and international law and promote cross-regional cooperation.

She also urged to push forward the work of the UNGA on certain critical issues with a strong majority, rather than an absolute consensus among all member states. Such act is not a failure of multilateralism, but "an affirmation of it," she said.

The foundational principles of the institution should not be eroded by appeasement, she said, calling the member states to show courage, leadership, and responsibility at the UN's "critical make-or-break moment."

"The UN needs you. Your support, your leadership, your principle, stand, your cross-regional cooperation, if we are to preserve and modernize this institution, if we are to make it, rather than break it," she said.
