The upcoming SCO Summit 2025 is expected to inject new forces to the development of Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), said Aleksandr Chervyakov, ambassador of Belarus to China.

Leaders from Asia, Europe and Africa will gather in the northern Chinese port city of Tianjin from Aug. 31 to Sept. 1 for the largest-ever SCO summit in history.

Established in 2001, the organization now has 10 member states, alongside two observer states and 14 dialogue partners.

As the 10th member state of SCO, Belarus attaches great importance to the organization, and has been a firm supporter and practitioner of Shanghai Spirit, which features mutual trust, mutual benefit, equality, consultation, respect for diverse civilizations and pursuit of common development.

In an interview with China Central Television (CCTV), Chervyakov highlighted the benefits that SCO brings to his country.

Since 2015, the proportion of trade volume between Belarus and SCO member states in its overall foreign trade has grown from nearly 50 percent to over 70 percent. This proves that Belarus has been actively cooperating with SCO member states. They are important markets for Belarus. The cooperative relationship with SCO member states has injected strong impetus into the economic development of Belarus," said Chervyakov.

He also lauded China's efforts in its capacity as rotating presidency of the SCO, stressing that China's experience can be learned by other member states.

"China's presidency of the SCO is a significant milestone in the organization's development. I must give the highest praise to that. It is China's presidency that makes SCO's operation more systematic. We have successfully held a series of events, covering a wide range of sectors – almost all the fields related to the economic development of member states. As the rotating chair of the SCO, China's work is exemplary, and its successful experience can be learned by the other member states that succeed China's presidency," Chervyakov said.

As for the highly-anticipated SCO Summit, Chervyakov said he believed that it will play a crucial role in further improving the organization's construction.

"Undoubtedly, the upcoming SCO Summit will be of great significance in the development of the organization. We hope that this summit will further improve organizational construction through a series of important institutional and practical mechanisms," Chervyakov noted.

The multilateral system is "under attack" amid global turmoil, President of the 80th UN General Assembly Annalena Baerbock warned in her remarks on Wednesday.

In her briefing on the priorities for the resumed 80th Session of the General Assembly, the UNGA president noted that the current multilateral system does not collapse all in a sudden, but "crumbles piece by piece" in divisions, compromises, and lack of political commitment.

The president called all the UN member states to defend the UN Charter and international law and promote cross-regional cooperation.

She also urged to push forward the work of the UNGA on certain critical issues with a strong majority, rather than an absolute consensus among all member states. Such act is not a failure of multilateralism, but "an affirmation of it," she said.

The foundational principles of the institution should not be eroded by appeasement, she said, calling the member states to show courage, leadership, and responsibility at the UN's "critical make-or-break moment."

"The UN needs you. Your support, your leadership, your principle, stand, your cross-regional cooperation, if we are to preserve and modernize this institution, if we are to make it, rather than break it," she said.
