The Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) has provided green and practical technologies and solutions for its member states to pursue green development, according to an official at a press conference held on Saturday ahead of the SCO summit in the northern Chinese port city of Tianjin.
The two-day gathering, which gets underway on Sunday, is set to be the biggest ever edition of the SCO summit, with the leaders of more than 20 countries and the heads of 10 international organizations in attendance.
Established in 2001, the organization has now grown to include 10 member states, alongside two observer states and 14 dialogue partners.
As SCO members attach great importance to ecological and environmental protection, green and sustainable development has become an important area for cooperation.
Guo Fang, China's Vice Minister of Ecology and Environment, briefed the media on the related cooperation achievements in this field within the SCO framework.
She noted that in recent years, member states have conducted extensive cooperation in policy dialogue, technological exchange, information sharing and capacity enhancement, made discussions in environmental governance, and had ecological and environmental protection and the concept of green development integrated into cooperation plans in various areas within the organization.
Guo highlighted China's contributions in promoting cooperation in various areas such as environmental protection and climate change responses, which has laid a solid foundation for sustainable development among SCO member states.
"We adhere to the principle of 'extensive consultation, joint contribution, and shared benefits' to promote the implementation of a series of cooperation projects that benefit all parties. For example, in terms of land degradation prevention and control, biodiversity conservation, water resource protection and utilization, and clean energy, we have conducted technological exchanges and joint research. A number of green and practical technologies and solutions have provided effective support for the green development of the SCO countries," she said.
Guo also noted that the SCO has strengthened information sharing and capacity building in green development in recent years so as to facilitate the sustainable economic and social development of all countries and promote harmonious coexistence between humans and nature.
"We have built a platform for knowledge sharing and capacity building. Based on a platform and a base, namely the SCO Environmental Information Sharing Platform and the China-SCO Ecological and Environmental Innovation Base, we hold training courses, seminars and on-site investigation activities every year, providing opportunities for environmental management personnel and technical experts of the member states to exchange views with and learn from one another, enhance their capabilities, and jointly improve the modernization level of the regional environmental governance system and governance capacity," said Guo.
