Xi lauds China-Russia ties as example of major-country relations

Chinese President Xi Jinping said on Tuesday that the China-Russia relationship has become an example of major-country ties, featuring permanent good-neighborly friendship, comprehensive strategic coordination and mutually beneficial cooperation.

Xi made the remarks while holding talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin, who is in China for the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Summit 2025, as well as commemorations marking the 80th anniversary of the victory in the Chinese People's War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War.

China is ready to strengthen high-level exchanges with Russia, support each other's development and revitalization, coordinate positions on issues involving the two countries' core interests and major concerns in a timely manner, and advance bilateral relations for greater development, Xi said.

The two sides should leverage major projects to steer their cooperation, develop exemplary cooperation projects, and promote deep-level integration of interests, he noted, calling for enhanced resilience and understanding in cooperation and all-out efforts to consolidate the overall cooperation.

The two countries' heads of state attending each other's commemorations marking the victory of the World Anti-Fascist War fully demonstrates their responsibility as major victorious nations of World War II (WWII) and permanent members of the United Nations (UN) Security Council, Xi said. It also displays their firm resolve to defend the victorious outcomes of WWII and safeguard a correct historical perspective on WWII, he noted.

Speaking of the Global Governance Initiative he put forward, Xi said the aim of proposing the initiative is to work together with all like-minded countries to resolutely safeguard the purposes and principles of the UN Charter, and build a more just and equitable global governance system.

China and Russia should further enhance coordination on multilateral platforms including the UN, the SCO, BRICS and G20, and jointly build a community with a shared future for humanity, Xi said.

Putin said that under the leadership of himself and President Xi, Russia-China relations have demonstrated a high degree of strategic importance and reached their highest level in history. He recalled Xi's state visit to Russia in May and attendance at the commemoration of the 80th anniversary of the Soviet Union's victory in the Great Patriotic War, and noted his own attendance at the commemoration of the 80th anniversary of China's victory in the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression.

These events, he said, show to the world that Russia and China stood side by side during the World Anti-Fascist War, playing a key role in securing victories on both the European and Eastern battlefields. They also reflect the two countries' firm stance in jointly defending historical truth and safeguarding the outcomes of WWII. The solidarity and cooperation forged during the war, he added, have become a solid foundation for the development of Russia-China relations in the new era.

Putin congratulated China on successfully hosting the SCO Summit in Tianjin, which produced multiple important consensuses and strongly promoted the organization's development. He said Xi's Global Governance Initiative is both timely and necessary, and will play an important role in addressing the global governance deficit. Russia is willing to maintain strategic coordination with China, enhance high-level exchanges, expand practical cooperation across various fields, and push bilateral relations to continue developing at a high level.

The two heads of state also held in-depth exchanges on international and regional issues of mutual concern.

The two sides signed more than 20 bilateral cooperation agreements in areas including energy, aerospace, artificial intelligence, agriculture, inspection and quarantine, health, scientific research, education, and media.

At noon the same day, Xi hosted a small-group tea meeting and a banquet with Putin.

China is willing to strengthen communication, enhance trust, eliminate interference, and deepen cooperation with Canada to bring bilateral relations forward on a steady and sound track in solid strides under the new circumstances, said Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on Thursday.

Wang, also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, met with Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand in Beijing on the day.

Referring to Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney's visit to China, the first by a Canadian prime minister in eight years, Wang said the trip marks a milestone in bilateral ties and signals a turning point in the relationship.

The leaders of the two countries will hold meetings and talks, which are expected to open up new prospects for bilateral relations, said Wang.

The world today is undergoing profound and complex changes, and the impact of China-Canada relations transcends the bilateral scope, Wang noted.

Wang said that China and Canada have different social systems, stemming from different historical and cultural heritage, and based on the choices of their respective people.

He urged both sides to view each other in a rational and amicable manner with an inclusive mindset, handle issues on the basis of mutual respect, focus on the agenda of cooperation, and send positive messages so as to foster optimism, inject greater confidence into the development of bilateral relations, and jointly build a new type of strategic partnership between China and Canada.

Anand said the new Canadian government attaches great importance to relations with China. She also added that Prime Minister Carney looks forward to engaging in in-depth exchanges with Chinese leaders during the visit to set the course for the development of bilateral relations, resume dialogue in various fields, pursue more mutually beneficial outcomes, enhance coordination and cooperation in multilateral affairs, and further advance the strategic partnership between the two countries.
