Torrential rain and violent winds brought by the super typhoon Ragasa have battered China's Macao Special Administrative Region and the southern port city of Zhuhai, causing severe flooding and triggering large-scale evacuations. Typhoon Ragasa, the 18th typhoon of the year and by far the strongest, first entered the South China Sea late Monday and has been moving along the southern edge of south China's Guangdong Province where it is expected to make landfall later on Wednesday evening.

In Macao, the typhoon has already caused severe flooding in low-lying areas, with floodwaters reaching up to 1.5 meters deep in the worst-hit zones. Local districts were seen engulfed in water, with businesses shuttered and debris floating by.

One local power company made the move to cut electricity supplies in the affected areas as a safety precaution, and say power will be restored as soon as the floodwaters safely subside.

Meanwhile, in the nearby Zhuhai city in Guangdong, the typhoon's fury has been intensifying.

Industrial monitoring cameras at Zhuhai Port captured scenes of the extreme weather shortly after 09:00 on Wednesday morning, as maximum wind speeds hit 31 meters per second, or over 110 kilometers per hour.

The footage shows relentless winds and torrential rain hammering the port, reducing visibility to a blur. The cameras themselves can be seen shaking as they are buffeted by the strong gusts coming in from the coast.

Zhuhai Port authorities had already taken proactive measures, including evacuating ships to safe anchorages and securing heavy equipment in anticipation of the typhoon's arrival.

China and Canada should work together to promote the stable, healthy and sustainable development of bilateral economic and trade relations, Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng said in Beijing on Friday.

He, also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, made the remarks while attending the Canada-China Trade and Investment Banquet together with the visiting Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney.

Speaking at the event, He said that under the strategic guidance of the important consensus reached by their leaders, China and Canada should adhere to the principles of mutual respect, peaceful coexistence, win-win cooperation, and mutual success, and jointly promote the stable, healthy, and sustainable development of bilateral economic and trade relations.

China is steadfastly expanding high-standard opening up, continuously developing new quality productive forces, and is willing to work with countries around the world, including Canada, to create new prospects for cooperation, said He.

Carney noted at the banquet that China is Canada's second-largest trading partner and said Canada looks forward to strengthening high-level exchanges with China, making full use of dialogue mechanisms in areas such as the economy and trade, and deepening cooperation in trade, agriculture, energy and other fields.

Carney arrived in Beijing on Wednesday to begin a four-day official visit to China, marking the first trip to the country by a Canadian prime minister in eight years.
