Chinese embassies across the Americas marked the 76th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China with high-level receptions and cultural events.

Celebrations also highlighted key diplomatic milestones, including the 55th anniversary of China-Canada relations and the 20th anniversary of their strategic partnership.

In Colombia, the Chinese Embassy hosted a reception attended by more than 200 guests, including Finance Minister German Avila, senior government officials, lawmakers, foreign diplomats, United Nations agency representatives, Chinese company staff, and overseas Chinese.

Avila expressed the country's positive willingness to deepen bilateral relations at the reception.

"On the occasion of the 76th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China, we extend our sincere wishes. May China's National Day serve as an important opportunity to promote the continuous growth, development, and consolidation of the great Chinese nation and to further strengthen the friendly relations between Colombia and China," said Avila.

The reception at the Chinese Embassy in Canada also celebrated the 55th anniversary of diplomatic relations and the 20th anniversary of the strategic partnership between China and Canada. More than 500 guests attended, including Canadian officials, senators, members of parliament, representatives from various sectors, foreign diplomats, Chinese company staff, overseas Chinese, and students.

David Morrison, Canada's deputy minister of foreign affairs, emphasized the country's clear stance on advancing bilateral relations during the reception.

"Prime Minister Carney has made very clear that his desire to recalibrate Canada-China relations and to advance our bilateral ties in a pragmatic and constructive manner. There is deep and sincere goodwill between the peoples of our two countries, which provides us with a strong base from which to build," he said. At a reception held by the Chinese Embassy in Mexico, attending officials praised the mutually beneficial and friendly cooperation between Mexico and China.

The reception also featured a screening of the trailer for Shenzhou 13, or Blue Planet Outside the Window, China's inaugural 8K space documentary film produced by China Media Group (CMG).

Following the screening, a Mexican representative praised China's technological achievements, highlighting the country's progress in space exploration and innovation.

"[The film is] truly magnificent! This is what China is accomplishing today, demonstrating its tremendous advancements in technology to the world. Their experiences in space are incredibly fascinating and captivating to us," said Aureny Aguirre O. Sunza, director-general for multilateral strategy at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Mexico.

Additionally, a dragon boat race was held in Panama to celebrate the PRC's 76th founding anniversary. The competition drew 49 teams from across Panama, as well as from countries such as Costa Rica and Trinidad and Tobago.

The U.S. State Department announced Wednesday that it is pausing immigrant visa processing from 75 countries.

The measure will apply to "countries whose migrants take welfare from the American people at unacceptable rates. The freeze will remain active until the U.S. can ensure that new immigrants will not extract wealth from the American people," the department said on X.

The pause impacts countries including Somalia, Haiti, Iran and Eritrea, "whose immigrants often become public charges on the United States upon arrival," said the State Department.

Earlier on Wednesday, the department announced in a memo that it would suspend visa processing for 75 countries, including Somalia, Russia, Afghanistan, Brazil, Iran, Iraq, Egypt, Nigeria, Thailand and Yemen, according to a Fox News report.

The pause will begin Jan. 21 and will continue indefinitely until the department conducts a reassessment of visa processing, the report said. The move came after the White House announced on Tuesday that it is ending temporary protected status for Somali immigrants amid fraud allegations in Minnesota.

On Monday, the State Department announced on social media that it had revoked over 100,000 visas since U.S. President Donald Trump took office nearly a year ago.

In November 2025, Trump announced his intention to permanently suspend immigration from what he described as "Third World countries", following the death of a National Guard member after being shot near the White House by an Afghan national.
