Chinese vice premier stresses comprehensively enhancement of basic research, original innovation

Chinese Vice Premier Ding Xuexiang has stressed the great significance of comprehensively enhancing basic research and the capabilities in original innovation in China.

Ding, also a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, made the remarks during inspection tours on basic research in Fujian, Shanghai and Beijing, following a symposium on strengthening basic research held in Shanghai on April 30.

Chinese President Xi Jinping, also general secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and chairman of the Central Military Commission, delivered an important speech at the symposium.

Ding called for thorough study and implementation of the guiding principles of the speech, in which Xi urged efforts to further solidify the foundation for building the country's strength in science and technology.

During the inspection tour in Beijing, Ding visited the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Huairou National Laboratory in Beijing to learn about advances in original innovation and breakthroughs in core technologies in key fields.

Efforts should be made to intensify original and disruptive innovation and realize mutual promotion and common progress of scientific discoveries and technological inventions, Ding said, emphasizing higher-level guarantees from major sci-tech infrastructure to accelerate breakthroughs in basic research.

The vice premier inspected the Shanghai Jiao Tong University and the University of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, calling for endeavor to further integrated development of education, science and technology and human resources, as well as support for young sci-tech personnel in shouldering main responsibilities.

At a site in Beijing to commemorate the "Two Bombs and One Satellite" project, Ding stressed carrying forward the spirit of the project to inspire the sci-tech personnel to make sci-tech achievements for the country.

While visiting the Contemporary Amperex Technology Co., Limited (CATL) in Ningde City of east China's Fujian Province and Huawei Lianqiu Lake Research and Development Center in Shanghai, Ding underscored the need to promote basic research, development and application in an integrated manner to consolidate leading positions in relevant industries.
