The second phase of the 138th Canton Fair opened Thursday in Guangzhou City, south China's Guangdong Province, drawing more than 10,000 exhibitors to showcase their products at around 25,000 booths under the theme "Quality Home Life."

The Phase 2 event, scheduled to run through October 27, is divided into three major sectors -- household products, gifts and decorations, and building materials and furniture, offering global purchasers effective and integrated procurement services in 15 exhibition areas.

Purchasers from large supermarkets around the world, including those from the United States, France and Japan, have been also attracted to this event.

Three theme forums will be held during the Phase 2 event, with topics like the expansion of domestic and international markets of the household industry, new business forms of cross-border e-commerce, and trade under the Belt and Road Initiative. Meanwhile, six trade promotion activities and around 160 new product releases will be held.

Focusing on advanced manufacturing, the first phase of the Canton Fair attracted over 157,000 offline overseas buyers from 222 countries and regions, representing a 6.3 percent increase compared to the previous edition. The third phase is set to take place from Oct 31 to Nov 4.

Established in 1957, the Canton Fair is held twice a year in spring and autumn. It is the longest-running of several comprehensive international trade events in China, and has been hailed as the barometer of China's foreign trade.

China has remained the world's largest online retail market for a 13th consecutive year, with its digital consumption exceeding 23.8 trillion yuan (about 3.39 trillion U.S. dollars), official data shows.

The figure was released at a national e-commerce work conference held from Tuesday to Wednesday.

The conference said that China's e-commerce sector has achieved solid gains in high-quality development over the past five years, emerging as a new source of momentum to foster new quality productive forces and playing an important role in advancing the country's new development paradigm.

Despite rising external uncertainties, China has continued to expand its win-win cooperation, increasing the number of Silk Road e-commerce cooperation partner countries to 36.

E-commerce has become a major engine for job creation and industrial upgrading. Employment in the sector has surpassed 78 million, and express delivery volumes have seen an average annual growth of nearly 20 percent over the past five years.

Software and information services linked to cloud computing and big data have also expanded rapidly.

The conference outlined the Ministry of Commerce's e-commerce policy priorities for 2026, including strengthening innovation-driven growth, improving the country's development environment, and expanding international cooperation.
