Commemorating Taiwan's restoration to the motherland will inspire people from across the Taiwan Strait to make a greater contribution to national reunification and rejuvenation, said a China Media Group commentary published on Friday.
An adapted version of the commentary is as follows:
China's national legislature on Friday voted to designate Oct. 25 as the Commemoration Day of Taiwan's Restoration. The decision was adopted at the five-day session of the Standing Committee of the 14th National People's Congress (NPC), which opened on Friday and was presided over by Zhao Leji, Chairman of the NPC Standing Committee. The state will hold commemorative activities in various forms on this day each year, as decided.
Commemorating Taiwan's restoration is conducive to demonstrate the irrefutable historical fact that Taiwan is an inseparable part of China, consolidate the international community's adherence to the one-China principle, inspire people from both sides of the Taiwan Strait to inherit and carry forward the great spirit forged in the war of resistance against Japanese aggression, and encourage them to make greater contribution to national reunification and rejuvenation.
It's of great significance to establish the Commemoration Day of Taiwan's Restoration and to hold commemorative activities at the national level. The restoration of Taiwan is an important achievement of the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and a compelling proof of the Chinese government's recovery of sovereignty over Taiwan. It is also an important part of the historical fact and legal chain that Taiwan is an integral part of China, as well as a shared memory and common glory for compatriots on both sides of the Taiwan Strait.
The current situation across the Taiwan Strait is complex and severe. The Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) authorities have repeatedly downplayed and denied the restoration of Taiwan, attempting to distort history and shape a historical view of "Taiwan secession" within the island.
The setting of the Commemoration Day of Taiwan's Restoration serves as a strong and resolute counter to their actions, and it will better safeguard the important historical fact of Taiwan's restoration and its return to the motherland, as well as the national glory associated with it. The commemoration day will also strengthen shared historical memory among people on both sides of the Taiwan Strait and guide Taiwan compatriots to uphold the overall interests of the Chinese nation and take resolute steps to oppose "Taiwan secessionism."
The establishment of the Commemoration Day of Taiwan's Restoration will further consolidate the consensus that both sides of the Taiwan Strait belong to one and the same China.
This year marks the 80th anniversary of Taiwan's restoration. Despite the DPP authorities having colluded with external forces to trumpet the notion that Taiwan's status is "undetermined," numerous commemorative activities have taken place on the island, including forums, seminars, and commemorative exhibitions. These events firmly say "no" to the "Taiwan secession" separatist forces' betrayal of the ancestors and distortion of history.
After the establishment of the Commemoration Day of Taiwan's Restoration, every year on Oct. 25, all Chinese people, including compatriots on both sides of the Taiwan Strait, can honor history and pay tribute to fallen heroes with immense pride. This will continuously strengthen their aspiration to become more proud, confident and assured in their identity as Chinese people, further solidifying their determination and belief in promoting national reunification and rejuvenation.
The great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation is unstoppable, and the prospects for national reunification are increasingly bright.
It is hoped that Taiwan compatriots, as stated by State Council Taiwan Affairs Office spokesman Chen Binhua on Friday, will join hands with the people on the mainland to act more resolutely to oppose the separatist position of "Taiwan secession" as well as external interference and to safeguard the common home of the Chinese nation, working together to advance the great cause of national reunification and create a bright future for national rejuvenation.
