The establishment of October 25 as the Commemoration Day of Taiwan's Restoration has drawn wide attention and enthusiastic discussion among people from all walks of life in Taiwan.

The Standing Committee of the 14th National People's Congress designated Oct 25 as the official commemoration day at its 18th session on Friday, and stipulated that the nation shall hold commemorative activities in various forms.

Wang Yung, chairman of the Reunification Alliance Party in Taiwan, said the recovery of Taiwan from Japanese occupation marks a crucial link in the historical and legal chain that affirms Taiwan as part of China, as well as a shared memory of the Chinese nation.

"The restoration of Taiwan was the result of the Chinese people's nationwide resistance against Japanese aggression, including the participation of people in Taiwan. It serves as a historic bond between the two sides of the Strait. Commemorating Taiwan's restoration carries great significance in reinforcing this historical connection and provides important educational value for people in Taiwan," said Wang.

Observers in Taiwan noted that the restoration of Taiwan stands as a shared pride and collective memory of all Chinese people.

Establishing a national commemoration day, they said, reflects the unwavering will to advance the resolution of the Taiwan question and the realization of the country's complete reunification.

"To achieve the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation, Taiwan must play its rightful and indispensable role. Only by joining hands and uniting our hearts can we accomplish the great goal of national rejuvenation," said Taiwan current affairs commentator Hsieh Chih-chuan.

Wang Bing-chung, another current affairs commentator in Taiwan, said that setting up Commemoration Day of Taiwan's Restoration and holding commemorative events will inspire Chinese people at home and abroad to remember history and more firmly oppose separatism and external interference.

"The mainland's decision to establish Taiwan Restoration Day in legal form reminds people on both sides of the Strait to remember together the historical fact of Taiwan's restoration. With the continued development, rejuvenation and strengthening of the Chinese nation, the Taiwan question will be resolved eventually. The complete reunification of the motherland will surely come with the growing strength of the Chinese nation," said Wang.

China and Canada should work together to promote the stable, healthy and sustainable development of bilateral economic and trade relations, Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng said in Beijing on Friday.

He, also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, made the remarks while attending the Canada-China Trade and Investment Banquet together with the visiting Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney.

Speaking at the event, He said that under the strategic guidance of the important consensus reached by their leaders, China and Canada should adhere to the principles of mutual respect, peaceful coexistence, win-win cooperation, and mutual success, and jointly promote the stable, healthy, and sustainable development of bilateral economic and trade relations.

China is steadfastly expanding high-standard opening up, continuously developing new quality productive forces, and is willing to work with countries around the world, including Canada, to create new prospects for cooperation, said He.

Carney noted at the banquet that China is Canada's second-largest trading partner and said Canada looks forward to strengthening high-level exchanges with China, making full use of dialogue mechanisms in areas such as the economy and trade, and deepening cooperation in trade, agriculture, energy and other fields.

Carney arrived in Beijing on Wednesday to begin a four-day official visit to China, marking the first trip to the country by a Canadian prime minister in eight years.
