A meeting commemorating the 80th anniversary of Taiwan's restoration after Japan's surrender in World War II was hosted by China’s permanent delegation to the United Nations at UN headquarters in New York on Monday.

Fu Cong, China's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, said at the meeting that the Standing Committee of the 14th National People's Congress (NPC), China's national legislature, had designated Oct. 25 as the Commemoration Day of Taiwan's Restoration.

On the same day in 1971, the UN General Assembly adopted Resolution 2758 with an overwhelming majority, restoring the lawful seat of the People's Republic of China in the UN -- a powerful demonstration of the international community's firm commitment to the one-China principle, Fu said.

He stressed that Taiwan is an inalienable part of China's territory, and that China will surely realize complete reunification, which is an unstoppable historic trend.

"For some time now, politically motivated to contain China by exploiting the Taiwan question, a handful of external forces have been colluding with the Taiwan authorities to misrepresent and challenge UN General Assembly Resolution 2758, conniving with and supporting the 'Taiwan independence' separatist activities, heightening the cross-Strait tensions, and undermining world peace and stability. Such acts, which run counter to the tide of history, are reprehensible, destined to be universally resisted and opposed by the international community, and doomed to be roundly crushed, sunk, and buried in the face of the unyielding, resolved, steely will, and formidable capabilities of the Chinese people to safeguard national sovereignty and territorial integrity," Fu said.

Participants at the meeting welcomed the establishment of the official commemorative day and reaffirmed their firm support for the one-China principle and the authority of Resolution 2758, voicing their backing for China's efforts to achieve complete reunification.

"The resolution recognized the People's Republic of China as the only, underline only, legitimate representative of China, an explicit affirmation of both the People's Republic of China's legitimacy and the principle that there is only one China," said Munir Akram, Pakistan's former Permanent Representative to the UN.

Amar Bendjama, Algeria's Permanent Representative to the UN, said that for Algeria, the resolution stands as a landmark in the history of the United Nations and represents a proud chapter in the country's diplomatic legacy.

"This historic restoration also reaffirmed that the government of the People's Republic of China is the sole and legitimate representative of the whole of China, and it underscored that Taiwan is an inalienable part of China and can never be separated from the motherland," said Pakistan's permanent representative to the UN Asim Iftikhar Ahmad.

"Brazil supports the Chinese government's efforts towards a peaceful process of national reunification. The Chinese government can continue counting on our support on this matter," said Brazilian UN ambassador Sergio Franca Danese.

The U.S. State Department announced Wednesday that it is pausing immigrant visa processing from 75 countries.

The measure will apply to "countries whose migrants take welfare from the American people at unacceptable rates. The freeze will remain active until the U.S. can ensure that new immigrants will not extract wealth from the American people," the department said on X.

The pause impacts countries including Somalia, Haiti, Iran and Eritrea, "whose immigrants often become public charges on the United States upon arrival," said the State Department.

Earlier on Wednesday, the department announced in a memo that it would suspend visa processing for 75 countries, including Somalia, Russia, Afghanistan, Brazil, Iran, Iraq, Egypt, Nigeria, Thailand and Yemen, according to a Fox News report.

The pause will begin Jan. 21 and will continue indefinitely until the department conducts a reassessment of visa processing, the report said. The move came after the White House announced on Tuesday that it is ending temporary protected status for Somali immigrants amid fraud allegations in Minnesota.

On Monday, the State Department announced on social media that it had revoked over 100,000 visas since U.S. President Donald Trump took office nearly a year ago.

In November 2025, Trump announced his intention to permanently suspend immigration from what he described as "Third World countries", following the death of a National Guard member after being shot near the White House by an Afghan national.
