The application of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies in filmmaking has not only improved production efficiency but also lowered costs, said experts.
Generative AI, in particular, plays a crucial role in the pre-production phase by enhancing the efficiency of character selection through the integration of actors' images with AI-generated scenarios. AI technology makes it possible for an actor to play a wide array of characters and for directors to have a clearer idea of how well an actor may match the character in his script, or even produce the visual effect of his final product, thus remarkably raising the efficiency of pre-production phase.
In the post-production phase, AI-powered dubbing system, which features an algorithm for dialogue performance that incorporates emotional characteristics, along with advanced models for lip-syncing and sound field matching, can translate dialogue into any language, seamlessly adapting it to film characters while preserving their tone, personality, and emotion.
"This technology will significantly enhance the international dissemination of our film and television works. With AI, we can produce more dubbed content," said Ma Ping, head of the AI Research Institute of China Film Group.
AI technology is now being integrated throughout the entire film production process. By simply inputting the film title and a brief description of the creative intent, AI can automatically generate storyboards and dynamic previews in just a couple of minutes.
"With the help of AI, both labor and equipment costs have been significantly reduced while the quality of visuals has improved. The technical aspects of filmmaking can now be managed by models, allowing creators to focus more on the creative side," Ma said.
"In the early stages of creativity and content generation, AIGC (Generative Artificial Intelligence) can significantly shorten the distance between imagination and visualization. Meanwhile, in post-production, AI serves as an invisible hand that reduces costs and increases efficiency, reshaping the cost structure, production timeline, and creative division of labor in filmmaking, ultimately giving rise to a new aesthetic in cinema," said Deng Guiyao, director of the audiovisual center at the Industrial Culture Development Center of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology.
