The Amazon rainforest is set to be more than just a backdrop but the central theme of the upcoming 30th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP30), as global leaders and delegates gather in Belem of Brazil for the conference to be held from Nov 10 to 21.
Belem is known as Brazil's Amazon city. Hosting the conference near the world's largest tropical rainforest has underscored its profound significance. The Amazon is both a key global carbon sink and a critical frontline in the fight against deforestation and climate change.
Organizers are preparing to immerse attendees in the region's unique culture and biodiversity. The main press conference room, for instance, is decorated with imagery of iconic Amazonian plants and puma, showing what is being described as a "highly concentrated presentation" of Amazonian heritage.
The COP30 is expected to guide climate-related negotiations, with an agenda focused on climate and nature, energy transition, Paris Agreement implementation review, nationally determined contributions and climate finance.
Attendees will review national climate action plans, push to achieve international climate finance goals, and work to accelerate a just transition to a global clean economy.
Prior to the opening of the COP30, the Belem Climate Summit, held from Nov 6 to 7, gathered attendees to discuss how to tackle the climate crisis through fair and sustainable energy transitions, and forest and biodiversity conservation.
