Chinese envoy to UN calls for protecting common security, practicing multilateralism

A Chinese envoy to the United Nations on Monday called for efforts to practice multilateralism and seek common security, at a Security Council briefing by the chairperson-in-office of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE).

Fu Cong, China's permanent representative to the UN, said that at present, the global security landscape continues to deteriorate, marked by worsening geopolitical conflicts, frequent flare-ups of hotspot issues, a significant rise in unilateralism and protectionism, and interlocking, compounding security threats, both traditional and non-traditional.

In this context, it is crucial for the UN and regional organizations, including the OSCE, to further strengthen cooperation and make due contributions to the maintenance of international peace and security. Under the current circumstances, it is important for the international community to champion a vision of common, comprehensive, cooperative, and sustainable security, said Fu.

He called on the international community to advance global security governance and to strive for universal and common security.

"Various forms of confrontation and injustice are happening in the world today, not because the purposes and principles of the UN Charter have become anachronistic, but because of the failure to safeguard and implement them effectively. The international community should practice true multilateralism, abide by the purposes and principles of the UN Charter, stand resolutely behind the international system with the UN at its core, the international order underpinned by international law, and the basic norms governing international relations based on the purposes and principles of the Charter, and defend the authority of the UN and its status as the principal platform for global security governance," said Fu.

Dialogue and negotiations are the only viable pathway to resolve the Ukraine crisis, said Fu, noting China supports all efforts conducive to peace and will continue to play, in its own way, a constructive role in the political settlement of the crisis.

Fu said China encourages the involved parties to play their parts in developing a balanced, effective, and lasting European security framework.

Two U.S. F-18 fighter jets entered Venezuelan airspace on Tuesday, circling for about 40 minutes.

The jets flew within 100 miles (about 161 km) of Maracaibo, Venezuela's second-largest city which is home to Rafael Urdaneta Air Base, one of the main military air bases in western Venezuela, according to a report from the Miami Herald.

Data from Sweden's FlightRadar24 showed the jets flying over the northern tip of Lake Maracaibo, above the waters of the Gulf of Venezuela, and between the cities of La Guajira, in Zulia state, and Coro, the capital of Falcon state. Zulia state is a key oil and gas producing region in Venezuela, while Falcon state has some of the country’s biggest refineries.

FlightRadar24 data also showed a U.S. MQ-4C Triton drone flying close to Venezuela’s coast on Tuesday, although it did not appear to enter Venezuelan airspace.

Venezuelan Foreign Affairs Minister Yvan Gil warned on Tuesday that the U.S. actions pose an extremely serious challenge to regional security and peace.

The president of Venezuela's National Assembly, Jorge Rodriguez Gomez, said that the U.S. military activities around the country were not intended to "combat drug trafficking", as the U.S, claims, but to attack and destroy Venezuela.

Iran warned that the recent situation poses a threat to peace in Latin America and the Caribbean.

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian spoke to Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro by telephone on Tuesday and reiterated his country's "willingness to stand by Venezuela", the Venezuelan Foreign Ministry reported.

Pezeshkian also said that U.S. provocations of Venezuela "violate the principles of international law and constitute a dangerous precedent for the peoples of the world."
