PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — The Latest on the deadly shooting at Brown University in Rhode Island (all times local):

The suspect in the deadly Brown University shooting may have also been wearing a camouflage gray mask,Providence, Rhode Island, Deputy Police Chief Tim O’Hara says. That's according to witnesses.

O’Hara says the suspect is male and could be in his 30s. The shooting happened inside of a classroom.

Brown University President Christina Paxson says she has been told all the victims are students, but she was not yet sure about the latest victim announced

Mayor Smiley said the ninth victim’s injuries were not life-threatening.

Emma Ferraro, a chemical engineering student, was in the Barus & Holley lobby working on a final project when she heard loud pops coming from the eastern side of the building. For a moment, everyone turned their heads and stood still, she recalled.

Once Ferraro processed that they were gunshots, she darted for the door and ran for a nearby building where she has been sheltering for a couple hours.

She said over text that she’s eagerly awaiting updates and nervous to learn details about the injuries. She can hear helicopters flying overhead and emergency vehicles nearby.

The suspect in the deadly Brown University shooting is a man who was dressed in black and last seen leaving the engineering building, according to Timothy O’Hara, Providence, Rhode Island, deputy chief of police.

.The mayor said a person preliminarily thought to be involved was detained but was later determined to have no involvement.

Brown University Provost Frank Doyle said final exams were taking place in the engineering building Saturday afternoon when a shooter opened fire, killing two and critically injuring eight.

Providence, Rhode Island, Mayor Brett Smiley asked for prayers for the families of the victims, noting the coming Christmas holiday. “It’s going to be a difficult rest of the day, difficult days and months ahead as this community heals,” the mayor said.

The mayor declined to say whether the victims were students.

Rhode Island Gov. Dan McKee said “the unthinkable has happened” following a shooting Saturday at Brown University that left two dead and eight critically wounded.

McKee said his office has been in touch with the White House.

Two people were killed and eight are in critical but stable condition following a shooting at Brown university, the mayor of Providence, Rhode Island, said.

Mayor Brett Smiley said those are the only known injuries and casualties.

The mayor said a shooter is not in custody. A shelter-in-place is in effect for the greater Brown University area.

At least two people have been killed and several others injured in a shooting at Brown University on Saturday, a law enforcement source told The Associated Press.

The official could not publicly discuss details of the ongoing investigation and spoke to AP on condition of anonymity.

University officials initially told students and staff that a suspect was in custody, before later saying that was not the case and that police were still searching for a suspect or suspects, according to alerts issued through Brown’s emergency notification system.

SYDNEY (AP) — At least 11 people were killed Sunday in a shooting attack during a Jewish holiday celebration at Sydney’s Bondi Beach, police said.

Mass shootings are rare in Australia, where gun ownership has been tightly controlled since a massacre in 1996.

Here is a timeline of some recent shootings.

Gunman Martin Bryant killed 35 people and wounded 23 in a rampage at the Port Arthur tourist precinct in the state of Tasmania.

In the wake of the attack, the federal and state governments agreed to ban semiautomatic and pump-action shotguns and rifles. A gun buyback scheme saw more than 700,000 firearms surrendered.

In the decade before the massacre, there had been 11 mass shootings with at least four dead victims. There were none in the decade that followed.
