Trump orders removal of National Guard from Chicago, Los Angeles, Portland

U.S. President Donald Trump said Wednesday that his administration is pulling the National Guard from three cities run by Democratic mayors -- Chicago, Los Angeles and Portland -- a few days after the U.S. Supreme Court ruled against the administration.

"We are removing the National Guard from Chicago, Los Angeles, and Portland, despite the fact that CRIME has been greatly reduced by having these great Patriots in those cities, and ONLY by that fact. Portland, Los Angeles, and Chicago were GONE if it weren't for the Federal Government stepping in," Trump said on Truth Social.

"We will come back, perhaps in a much different and stronger form, when crime begins to soar again," Trump said, calling Democrat mayors and governors of those areas "greatly incompetent."

The announcement came just a few days after the Supreme Court blocked Trump's plan to send the National Guard to Chicago to protect U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement's agents.

Trump has argued that it's necessary to deploy the National Guard to these Democrat-ruled places due to surging crime, while Democrats have questioned the political motivations behind such moves.

Upon reassuming the U.S. presidency in January 2025, Donald Trump labeled these three Democratic-led cities as "problem cities."

Starting in June of 2025, federal agencies including the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) deployed a large number of officers to carry out operations targeting undocumented immigrants in areas including Los Angeles County, California.

Following these actions, the Trump administration subsequently announced the deployment of National Guard troops to Los Angeles, Washington, D.C., and Chicago to assist with immigration enforcement.

Several state and local governments filed lawsuits seeking to block the Trump administration from sending National Guard personnel to their jurisdictions. On December 23, 2025, the U.S. Supreme Court issued a preliminary ruling stating that the Trump administration could not deploy the National Guard to Chicago.

Several dozen people are feared dead and around 100 injured Thursday after an explosion at a bar in the Crans-Montana ski resort in Valais Canton of southwestern Switzerland, local police said.

Those injured in the blast and subsequent fire suffered serious injuries and were taken to hospitals in Sion, capital of Valais canton, as well as in other cities, Valais Canton Police Chief Frederic Gisler said at a press conference.

An investigation is underway to determine the cause of the explosion, but authorities have ruled out an attack.

Helicopters and ambulances, including some from abroad, rushed to the scene, as the intensive care units and operating rooms of local hospitals are at full capacity, said local officials at the press conference.

Guy Parmelin, President of the Swiss Confederation, has arrived at the scene of the accident.
