China called for the comprehensive implementation of the 2016 peace agreement in Colombia to address ongoing security and development challenges, according to a statement by a Chinese envoy at the United Nations Security Council on Friday.

Sun Lei, China's deputy permanent representative to the UN, expressed this during a meeting on the situation in Colombia. He noted that while the joint efforts of the Colombian government and its people have led to positive progress, the peace process has now entered a critical stage.

Sun emphasized that the country still faces a complex landscape of multiple challenges, particularly regarding security and development.

"China supports the Colombian government in continuing to strengthen overall coordination and increasing resource investment, while taking more concrete actions in areas such as rural reform, disarmament and reintegration, security, and transitional justice," said Sun.

Furthermore, the Chinese envoy expressed appreciation for the vital role played by the UN Verification Mission in Colombia. He urged the international community to scale up the support and investment to ensure continued progress in Colombia’s peace process.

The U.S. military reported on Friday that it struck an alleged drug-smuggling boat in the eastern Pacific, marking the first known strike of its kind since the U.S. raid on Venezuela on January 3.

Two people were killed in the latest strike and one survived, the U.S. Southern Command said in a post on X.

"Intelligence confirmed the vessel was transiting along known narco-trafficking routes in the Eastern Pacific and was engaged in narco-trafficking operations," said the command.

The U.S. military has sunk over 30 alleged drug boats in the Caribbean and the eastern Pacific since September 2025, resulting in more than 110 deaths.
