China supports Venezuela in safeguarding its sovereignty, dignity and lawful rights, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian said on Tuesday in Beijing.

Lin made the statement in response to a media query on the latest situation in Venezuela at a press conference.

"One month ago, the United States brazenly launched a military strike against Venezuela and forcibly detained President Maduro and his wife. Such hegemonic acts seriously violate international law, infringe upon Venezuela's sovereignty, and threaten peace and stability in Latin America and the Caribbean region. China firmly opposes this. China supports Venezuela in safeguarding its sovereignty, dignity and legitimate rights, and will work with the international community to resolutely defend the purposes and principles of the UN Charter, uphold the bottom line of international morality, and defend international fairness and justice," he stated.
