The U.S. dollar edged lower in late trading on Tuesday.

The dollar index, which measures the greenback against six major peers, decreased by 0.21 percent to 97.434 at 15:00 (2000 GMT).

In late New York trading, the euro advanced to 1.1811 dollars from 1.1783 dollars in the previous session, and the British pound rose to 1.3684 dollars from 1.3651 U.S. dollars in the previous session.

The U.S. dollar bought 155.77 Japanese yen, higher than 155.71 Japanese yen in the previous session. The U.S. dollar fell to 0.7756 Swiss francs from 0.7809 Swiss francs, and it dropped to 1.3644 Canadian dollars from 1.3698 Canadian dollars. The U.S. dollar fell to 8.9154 Swedish Kronor from 8.9780 Swedish Kronor.

U.S. stocks ended lower on Tuesday.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell by 166.67 points, or 0.34 percent, to 49,240.99. The S and P 500 sank 58.63 points, or 0.84 percent, to 6,917.81. The Nasdaq Composite Index shed 336.92 points, or 1.43 percent, to 23,255.19.

Six of the 11 primary S and P 500 sectors ended in red, with technology and communication services leading the laggards by going down 2.17 percent and 1.28 percent, respectively. Meanwhile, energy and materials led the gainers by rising 3.29 percent and 2 percent, respectively.
