The Chinese Embassy in Nicaragua on Thursday held a reception to celebrate the Chinese New Year, with a promotional video of China Media Group (CMG)'s Spring Festival Gala being played on a loop.

The Spring Festival, which falls on Feb 17 this year, is one of the most important holidays in China, celebrated with family reunions and wishes for good luck in the coming year. This year's Spring Festival marks the beginning of the Year of the Horse.

The reception was attended by over 300 guests, including Nicaraguan political and business figures, overseas Chinese, and representatives of Chinese-funded enterprises and Chinese students in Nicaragua.

At the event, Qu Yuhui, Ambassador of China to Nicaragua, extended New Year's greetings and best wishes for the Year of the Horse to all Chinese nationals.

"The upcoming Year of the Horse is also the fifth anniversary of the resumption of diplomatic relations between China and Nicaragua. We hope that in this important year, China and Nicaragua will move towards a better future, build better China-Nicaragua relations and take the friendship between two countries to the next level," said Qu.

Nicaraguan guests conveyed greetings from Nicaragua's presidential couple, Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo to the people of China. They praised China as a major nation with global influence, spoke highly of the achievements in bilateral relations since the resumption of diplomatic ties in December 2021, and expressed gratitude for China's assistance and support.

"We have begun the fifth year of restoring diplomatic relations, and our relations have achieved fruitful results in various fields. On behalf of Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega and Co-president Rosario Murillo, we would like to convey sincere and warm greetings to Chinese President Xi Jinping and Chinese nationals. We celebrate this festival together, which unites us and further deepens our friendship," said Laureano Ortega Murillo, presidential advisor of Nicaragua.

The promotional video for CMG's 2026 Spring Festival Gala captivated the attention of the guests at the event with its compelling performance, vividly displaying the cultural essence of the Chinese New Year and the vitality of China.

During Spring Festival, watching the Spring Festival Gala on television is a cherished part of the celebrations in hundreds of millions of Chinese homes.

This year's Spring Festival Gala will be broadcast live around the world on the Chinese New Year's Eve on February 16.

"CMG has done an impressive job in the collection of image data, from which Nicaraguan people not only enjoy the magnificent natural scenery, but also see the mountains, cities, traditional villages and modern cities with advanced technology in China, and also feel the various practices and inheritance of China culture," said Carlos, a Nicaraguan artist, after watching the promotional video.

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) aims to deepen its cooperation with China across all fields, thereby reinforcing its partnership with the Global South as a whole, said UNESCO director-general Khaled El-Enany.

El-Enany visited China's Hangzhou, Beijing and Shanghai from May 11 to 14, his fourth time in the country and first time as UNESCO director-general. Speaking with CCTV in Beijing during the visit, he highlighted the significance of cooperation with China, noting that the partnership goes beyond the bilateral scope.

"I'm here to deepen the partnership, the very strong and well-established partnership with China, one of the big partners to UNESCO. And when you deal with China, I think it's beyond a bilateral relationship. We are dealing with the global South. We are working with China in all the fields of competence of UNESCO - in education, science, culture, communication, information. Since I arrived at UNESCO in November 2025, I'm building a very strong partnership with your permanent delegation at UNESCO, a very active one," El-Enany said in an interview that aired on Friday.

In Hangzhou, the UNESCO chief attended the opening and the plenary session of the 2026 World Digital Education Conference. He described the meeting as fruitful in terms of consensus-building.

"We [all agreed] that digital transformation and using AI [in education] is a must, but it must complement what human beings are doing. It must be ethical, equitable and inclusive," he said.

El-Enany highlighted his meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing on May 12.

"He reiterated his strong commitment to intercultural dialogue, to mutual learning among the civilizations. And this resonated [with] what he had said at UNESCO in his historic visit in 2014 to UNESCO in March, which is very aligned with the mandate of UNESCO - to build peace in the minds of women and men and to defend peace through education, science and culture," said the director-general.
