The international community must stay on high alert against the resurgence of militarism in Japan and join hands to safeguard the fruits of the World War II and regional peace and stability, said a Chinese military spokesman in Beijing on Tuesday.
Jiang Bin, spokesman for China's Ministry of National Defense, made the remarks at a press briefing in response to media reports that Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi has said that the Japanese Self-Defense Force (SDF) should be enshrined in the constitution.
"For a long time, the Japanese government has continuously breached the principle of exclusively defense-oriented principle through the so-called 'interpretations' of the constitution. It has lifted restrictions on the right to collective self-defense and, under the pretext of 'defense,' vigorously developed offensive weapons and equipment, cloaking Japan's remilitarization in a false veneer of 'rule of law.' Now the Japanese government is brazenly seeking to enshrine the SDF in the constitution. This is not a legal refinement but an attempt to undermine the foundation of the pacifist constitution; not legitimizing the SDF but seeking to loosen restriction on it; and not returning to a so-called 'normal state' but recklessly attempting to revisit the wrong path of militarism," he said.
"All signs indicate that Japan's right-wing forces are deliberately challenging the post-war international order through military, media, and legal means, among others. The international community must remain highly vigilant and resolutely counter these efforts, and work together to safeguard the victorious outcomes of the World War II, as well as regional peace and stability," said Jiang.
