U.S. dollar ticks up

The U.S. dollar increased in late trading on Wednesday.

The dollar index, which measures the greenback against six major peers, went up 0.56 percent to 97.702 at 15:00 (2000 GMT).

In late New York trading, the euro lost to 1.1788 dollars from 1.1845 dollars in the previous session, and the British pound was down to 1.3503 dollars from 1.3559 dollars in the previous session.

The U.S. dollar bought 154.79 Japanese yen, higher than 153.39 Japanese yen of the previous session. The U.S. dollar added to 0.7728 Swiss francs from 0.7705 Swiss francs, and it increased to 1.3698 Canadian dollars from 1.3641 Canadian dollars. The U.S. dollar climbed to 9.0395 Swedish kronor from 8.9847 Swedish kronor.

Oil prices advanced on Wednesday.

The West Texas Intermediate for March delivery increased by 2.86 U.S. dollars, or 4.59 percent, to settle at 65.19 dollars a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Brent crude for April delivery gained 2.93 dollars, or 4.35 percent, to settle at 70.35 dollars a barrel on the London ICE Futures Exchange.
