Regarding the Iran situation, a Chinese spokesman said on Wednesday that China calls for an immediate stop to military operations, preventing further escalation of tensions, and resuming dialogue and negotiations to uphold peace and stability in the Middle East.

Lou Qinjian, the spokesman for the fourth session of the 14th National People's Congress (NPC), made the statement at a press conference held one day ahead of the opening of the session.

"China is paying close attention to the Iran situation. Iran's national sovereignty, security and territorial integrity should be respected. China calls for an immediate stop to military operations, preventing further escalation of tensions, and resuming dialogue and negotiations to uphold peace and stability in the Middle East. To this end, China will continue to play its role as a responsible major country," said Lou.

"China holds that mutual respect and equality among all countries, big or small, represents the progress of history and is the foremost principle of the UN Charter. No country has the right to control global affairs or the destiny of others, or keep advantages in development all to itself. Even less should one be allowed to do whatever it likes," said Lou.

"President Xi Jinping put forward the Global Governance Initiative, emphasizing sovereignty equality, international rule of law, multilateralism, a people-centered approach, and real actions. The initiative provides China's solution to promoting the building of a more just and equitable global governance system," said the spokesman.

The year 2025 marked the 80th anniversary of the victory of the World Anti-Fascist War and the founding of the United Nations. Eighty years ago, the international community learned profound lessons from the scourge of two world wars and founded the United Nations, said the spokesman.

"Over 80 years of practice has clearly showed to the world that the UN's role should be strengthened, not weakened, and the UN's status must be safeguarded, not replaced. As a major country in the world and a permanent member of the UN Security Council, China stands ready to work with other countries to firmly maintain the authority and status of the UN, uphold the purposes and principles of the UN Charter, practice true multilateralism, and make more contributions to improving the global governance system and building a community with a shared future for humanity," said Lou.

Chinese nationals evacuated from Iran to Azerbaijan after the United States and Israel launched military strikes on Iran arrived in Beijing on Wednesday.

In the early hours of Wednesday morning, flight J267 from Baku, the capital city of Azerbaijan, touched down at Beijing Capital International Airport.

Among the passengers was a small group of Chinese nationals escaping a war that began with loud explosions in Tehran, capital of Iran on Saturday.

A bus arranged by the Chinese embassy in Azerbaijan left the Astara checkpoint in southern Azerbaijan on the border with Iran early on Sunday afternoon, carrying the first group of the 76 Chinese nationals to Baku.

"The Astara Crossing is the closest one to Tehran, and the road conditions are relatively good," said Wu, a Chinese evacuee who just landed in Beijing.

The Astara Crossing is one of five land border points recommended by the Chinese embassy. Chinese nationals can enter Azerbaijan visa-free, but the group still faced delays at the checkpoint. After hours of coordination by Chinese embassy staff, they were able to cross and took a bus to Baku.

While some chose to rest in the city, others booked the first flight they could find, despite the hefty price tag. As they returned home, the conflict is still ongoing there.

"I felt very emotional when we entered the Chinese airspace. At last I was back in my home country. I felt relieved. But I'm still worried about the people back in Iran," said Ai, another evacuee.

Iran retaliated with a series of counterattacks against Israel and U.S. targets across the region, with explosions reported in Bahrain, Qatar, Kuwait, Jordan, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), and Saudi Arabia, among other countries.
