Trade should not be weaponized, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning said in Beijing on Wednesday.

Mao made the remarks while responding to a media query about U.S. President Donald Trump's trade threats against Spain. Trump on Tuesday threatened to "cut off all trade with Spain" for the country's refusal to allow the U.S. military to use its base for attacks on Iran.

"The military strikes by the United States and Israel against Iran violate international law, and trade should not be used as a tool or weapon," she said.

At least nine people were killed and more than 20 others wounded when an Iranian missile struck a residential area in west Jerusalem's Beit Shemesh on Sunday, obliterating a synagogue and destroying a public bomb shelter beneath it.

The strike leveled homes across the neighborhood, leaving piles of shattered concrete and twisted metal, while nearby cars were reduced to wreckage.

Eli Beer, founder of the volunteer emergency medical service United Hatzalah, described the extensive damage at the scene in an interview with China Global Television Network (CGTN) on Monday.

"They were aiming to blow up big buildings with it. It landed right here on a small tiny building. It was a synagogue and it was a bomb shelter underneath it, and this place was completely destroyed. And it went deep in, killed nine people, injured over 20 people. The whole area was literally 50 homes around us, either damaged or destroyed. The amount of devastation that was made is huge, a lot more than normal. This is a 75-year-old area, and a lot of buildings here have collapsed," Beer said.

Sunday's strike came as Iran continues its counterattacks in response to a joint U.S.-Israeli military operation, which has killed Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, along with many high-ranking officials, and resulted in a heavy civilian death toll across the Islamic Republic since Saturday.
