China will advance new urbanization and coordinated regional development as one of the major tasks for 2026, according to a government work report delivered by Chinese Premier Li Qiang at the opening meeting of the fourth session of the 14th National People's Congress (NPC) on Thursday.

Li said steps will be taken to ensure regions can leverage their respective local strengths as part of wider, coordinated development efforts.

"We will advance new urbanization and coordinated regional development. We will continue to promote people-centered new urbanization, making urban governance smarter and more meticulous, and building people-centered modern cities. We will ensure more coordinated regional development and optimize functional zoning to guide localities in better leveraging their comparative advantages based on their defined functions," he said.

"We will support major provincial economies in assuming greater responsibility, enhance the coordinated and interconnected development of key city clusters, carry out national initiatives for industry relocation, development, and upgrading, and boost cooperation across administrative divisions," said the premier.
