Mojtaba Khamenei, son of Ali Khamenei, was selected as Iran's new supreme leader, Iran's Assembly of Experts announced on Sunday.
In a statement, the assembly confirmed Mojtaba Khamenei's election as the country's third supreme leader, citing "the decisive vote of the respected representatives" of the assembly.
Mojtaba Khamenei, born in 1969, is the son of Iran's late Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, who was killed in the joint U.S.-Israeli strikes.
Under Iran's constitution, the Supreme Leader holds ultimate authority over major state affairs and serves as the supreme commander of the country's armed forces.
The Assembly of Experts is the deliberative body of Iran empowered to appoint, supervise, and discharge the Supreme Leader of Iran.
Iran's Mehr News Agency reports on Sunday that the Assembly of Experts has made its final decision regarding the choice of the country's Supreme Leader.
On the same day, U.S. President Trump threatened that the appointment of Iran's next supreme leader will need U.S. approval or "he's not going to last long."
In an earlier media interview, Trump said that Mojtaba Khamenei would be an "unacceptable" choice to replace his father.
Meanwhile, the Israel Defense Forces warned on Sunday that it will "continue to pursue the successor and anyone who tries to appoint him."
