NPC deputies discuss ways to improve veterans' resettlement, employment

Deputies to the 14th National People's Congress (NPC), China's top legislature, recently shared their views on improving resettlement and employment support for veterans.

The National People's Congress (NPC), China's top legislature, concluded its annual session in Beijing on Thursday, bringing an end to this year's "two sessions" political meetings after the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), the country's top political advisory body, closed its annual session the day before.

Xie Jian, an NPC deputy from south China's Guangdong Province, has worked as a postal clerk since retiring from the Navy in 1988. For more than 30 years, he has dedicated himself to serving fishermen and soldiers stationed on the islands.

"This year, I also heard about the care and support for veterans in our government work report, which truly warmed my heart. Having transitioned from 'military green' to 'postal green,' I may have retired from service, but I remain committed to serving the people in my local community," said Xie.

Focusing on the 15th Five-Year Plan (2026-2030), Xie's proposal to the two sessions, titled "Promoting the Construction of the Shenzhen-Zhuhai (Macao) Corridor," has received feedback from relevant departments this year.

Xie said that over the past nine years in his duties, he has consistently offered advice and suggestions on the Greater Bay Area (GBA) 's economic development, emphasizing that economic growth is fundamental to the resettlement and employment of veterans.

"Therefore, I propose to accelerate the development of the marine economy and promote the infrastructure in our islands, as this can help create employment opportunities for veterans returning to their communities," he said.

Meanwhile, another deputy, Dong Mingzhu, chairwoman of Gree Electric Appliances, a leading home appliance manufacturer headquartered in south China's Zhuhai, has worked to provide employment opportunities and support for ex-service personnel.

Since 2019, Gree Electric Appliances has hired a total of 625 veterans. In 2021, the company established a dedicated unit to serve and organize veterans.

Over the past seven consecutive years, the company has selected 93 "most distinguished veterans" from among its employees, using their stories to inspire others.

"Our company has always liked hiring veterans. Through their military training, they develop strong discipline and good professional qualities. They also have a strong sense of organization. More importantly, after they return from the military, we treat them as key candidates for development and look at their potential for further growth," she said.

Dong believes that companies are an important channel for the resettlement and employment of veterans, as mentioned in the government work report.

"I believe that enterprises are an integral part of society. Without the country, there would be no enterprises. Therefore, we have a responsibility to contribute to the country's development and the development of the military," she said.

Military targets in Iran's Kharg Island have been "totally obliterated" in the latest U.S. bombing raids, U.S. President Donald Trump said Friday on Truth Social.

"Moments ago, at my direction, the United States Central Command executed one of the most powerful bombing raids in the History of the Middle East, and totally obliterated every MILITARY target in Iran's crown jewel, Kharg Island," the president wrote in the post.

He added that he had "chosen NOT to wipe out the Oil Infrastructure on the Island."

"However, should Iran, or anyone else, do anything to interfere with the Free and Safe Passage of Ships through the Strait of Hormuz, I will immediately reconsider this decision," Trump wrote.

A spokesman from the Iranian Khatam al-Anbiya Central Headquarters warned on Saturday local time that the "smallest attack on the energy infrastructure and ports" will trigger a "crushing and devastating response".

"In the event of such aggression, all oil and gas infrastructure in the region in which the U.S. and its Western allies are stakeholders will be set on fire and destroyed," he said.

Located about 24 kilometers off the coast of Iran in the Gulf, Kharg Island serves as the export terminal for 90 percent of Iran's oil shipments.
