Chinese Premier Li Qiang called for further efforts to consolidate and expand the positive momentum of steady economic growth in China.

Li, who is also a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, made the remarks while presiding over a symposium with economic experts and entrepreneurs in Beijing on Friday to listen to opinions and suggestions on the current economic situation and upcoming economic work.

China's economy achieved a good start in the first quarter. Although external shocks have posed challenges to the economic operation, macro policies have taken proactive measures and responded effectively, and new drivers of high-quality development have been continuously accumulated and strengthened, according to attendees of the meeting.

They also put forward suggestions on promoting sustained improvement of the economy at the meeting.

Li spoke after experts and entrepreneurs made their speeches, and noted that all local authorities and government departments have earnestly implemented more proactive and effective macro policies, with work completed quickly and economic operation seeing a strong start.

Efforts should be made to gain a profound understanding of the internal driving forces for the stable and positive development of China's economy, conduct in-depth analysis of the future direction of the international economic and trade development, focus on managing China's own affairs well, and keep a firm hold on the initiative in development, Li said. It is necessary to earnestly carry out all tasks and continuously consolidate and expand the positive momentum of steady economic growth, Li stressed.

He emphasized the efforts to implement macro policies more effectively, and make the policies more forward-looking, targeted, and coordinated.

Li said efforts should be made to promote the high-quality and efficient development of the service industry. Through the in-depth integration and mutual empowerment of advanced manufacturing and modern services, the overall leap of the industrial system can be supported.

China should make greater efforts to promote employment and income growth for urban and rural residents, and strengthen the virtuous cycle of increasing residents' income, expanding domestic demand and economic development, Li said. Li hoped that entrepreneurs will delve deeply into their industries and strengthen their enterprises, making more contributions in leading innovative development and promoting employment and income growth.

He expressed the hope that experts will enhance forward-looking research on strategic issues and offer more constructive suggestions, Li said.

Cheng Li-wun, chairperson of the Chinese Kuomintang (KMT) party, expressed gratitude to Xi Jinping, general secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, for his goodwill, and urged all political parties in Taiwan to work together for peace.

She made the remarks at a press conference in Beijing on Friday after meeting Xi.

"I sincerely hope that all political parties in Taiwan shall give up their differences and work together for peace when it comes to cross-Strait relations. General Secretary Xi also showed this significant goodwill just now. Such exchanges certainly will not be confined to exchanges between the Kuomintang and the Communist Party. I believe such a broad vision and open-mindedness are something the Chinese Kuomintang is very pleased to see. We are not here today for the selfish interests of a single party. We are here today because we have our historical responsibility, and because we cannot allow Taiwan or the Taiwan Strait to fall into a battlefield. So we are taking the lead. Now that we have begun to blaze the trail, and it will only become ever smoother and broader going forward," Cheng said.

Invited by the CPC Central Committee and Xi, Cheng is the first KMT chairperson to have led a delegation to the Chinese mainland in a decade. The delegation, on a six-day visit, had visited Jiangsu Province and Shanghai before coming to Beijing.
