China's top legislator Zhao Leji met with visiting Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez in Beijing on Tuesday, to discuss relations between their two countries.

At the meeting, Zhao, chairman of the National People's Congress (NPC) Standing Committee, said that Chinese President Xi Jinping met with the Spanish prime minister earlier the same day, reaching important consensus and providing guidance for the next stage of bilateral relations.

Zhao voiced China's willingness to work with Spain to implement the consensus reached by the two leaders, consolidate political mutual trust, and advance mutually beneficial cooperation across all fields, so as to jointly build a comprehensive strategic partnership that is more strategically resilient, more dynamic, and of greater international influence.

China's NPC stands ready to work with Spanish parliament to enhance exchanges between the legislative bodies and strengthen experience-sharing in legislation, supervision and governance, so as to foster a sound legal environment for bilateral cooperation, according to Zhao.

Reaffirming Spain's commitment to the one-China principle, Sanchez said his country hopes to expand cooperation with China in economy and trade, investment, people-to-people exchanges, education, and tourism.

He also expressed support for enhancing exchanges between the legislative bodies, safeguarding multilateralism, and promoting sound and stable development of Spain-China and EU-China relations.

At the invitation of Chinese Premier Li Qiang, Sanchez is on an official visit to China from April 11 to 15.
