The European Commission said it will keep options open to protect its interests as the European Union (EU) weighs U.S. President Donald Trump's threat to impose a 25 percent tariff on cars and trucks imported from Europe starting next week.
Trump said Friday on Truth Social that the EU was not complying with a trade agreement, and announced he will raise tariffs on European cars and trucks to 25 percent beginning next week.
In response, a European Commission spokesperson said Friday the EU is implementing the relevant trade agreements in line with standard legislative procedures, and continues to keep the U.S. side fully informed throughout.
It remains unclear what legal basis the Trump administration would rely on for the threatened tariff increase, and the White House has not issued any official statement.
