Digital scent technology is reshaping consumer experiences across various industries in Hangzhou, east China's Zhejiang Province, as smart devices release tailored fragrances into everyday settings.
From West Lake performances where tea and osmanthus aromas match the stage, to ride hailing cars, museums and hotels, smart scent devices are turning ordinary settings into immersive experiences.
"The scent made me feel like I was really surrounded by a sea of flowers," said Wu Zhilin, an audience member.
"It was a wonderful show. I really liked that it was very colorful, and the perfume was not only one scent but multiple scents. It was a beautiful show. I've never seen it in any country before," said Maria, a foreign tourist.
The use of digital scent has gone far beyond live performances. In ride-hailing cars, smart scent diffusers can change their fragrance in sync with the music playing inside.
At the China National Tea Museum, the aromas of different kinds of tea have been programmed into scent diffusers, allowing visitors to learn the distinct fragrant notes of teas from different regions.
"In this way, we can not only learn about the tea, but also has a deeper understanding of the tea leaves as it's more interactive," said Lu Kun, a visitor.
"This approach not only helps us learn the knowledge about tea, but also enhances interaction and deepens our understanding of the tea itself," said visitor Lu Kun.
In hotels, aromatherapy has become part of guest room services with the help of smart scent diffusers.
