Chinese President Xi Jinping and U.S. President Donald Trump agreed on a new vision of building "a constructive China-U.S. relationship of strategic stability" during their meeting in Beijing, charting a new course for the future development of China-U.S. relations and injecting greater stability and certainty into a turbulent and changing world.
At the invitation of Xi, Trump paid a state visit to China from Wednesday to Friday. This marked the first visit to China by a U.S. president in almost nine years and the first meeting between the two heads of state since they met last time in October 2025 in Busan, the Republic of Korea.
In their historic meeting, Xi and Trump engaged in candid, in-depth, constructive and strategic communication on major issues concerning China-US relations and world peace and development.
Their meeting included formal talks, a welcome banquet, a private meeting and a visit to the Temple of Heaven.
During their talks on Thursday morning, Xi said that China and the United States have more common interests than differences, and the two countries must jointly answer the questions of the times.
"Dear President Trump, it is a great pleasure to meet with you here in Beijing. This is your first visit to China in nine years. I have always believed that China and the United States have more common interests than differences. Success in one is an opportunity for the other, and a stable bilateral relationship is good for the world. When our two sides cooperate, both benefit; when we confront each other, both suffer. China and the United States should be partners instead of rivals, helping each other succeed and prosper together, and finding the right way for major countries to get along well with each other in the new era," Xi said.
For his part, Trump expressed confidence in the bright future of U.S.-China relations.
"We've had a fantastic relationship. We've gotten along. When there were difficulties, we worked it out. [I have] such respect for China, the job you've done. You're a great leader. I say it to everybody, you're a great leader," Trump said.
At a banquet at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing to welcome Trump on his state visit to China, Xi called on China and the United States to be partners instead of rivals.
Xi said that both Trump and he agreed that the China-U.S. relationship is currently the most important bilateral relationship in the world today.
"Today, President Trump and I had an in-depth exchange of views on China-U.S. relations as well as the international and regional situation. We agreed to build a constructive China-U.S. relationship of strategic stability to promote the steady, sound, and sustainable development of China-U.S. relations, and bring more peace, prosperity and progress to the world," Xi said.
