Cross-provincial intercity railway in Yangtze River Delta enters main construction phase

The Shanghai-Suzhou-Jiaxing Intercity Railway, the Yangtze River Delta's first rapid commuter line spanning two provinces and one municipality, has entered the main construction phase across provincial boundaries.

As one of China's most economically dynamic regions, the Yangtze River Delta stands to gain significantly from this strategic infrastructure project.

Upon completion, the 170-kilometer corridor will seamlessly connect Shanghai's Qingpu District, Wujiang District of Suzhou City in Jiangsu Province, and Jiaxing City of Zhejiang Province, accelerating regional integration and high-quality development.

The new intercity railway is designed to blend speed with convenience. Unlike conventional high-speed rail, which requires advance ticketing and assigned seating, the line will operate with metro-like frequency, with train departing every 5 to 10 minutes.

Yet it significantly outpaces traditional metro systems, with a design speed of 160 km/h, roughly double that of urban subways.

High-speed rail and conventional trains are like the "arteries" connecting major hubs, while this intercity line functions more like "capillaries", reaching smaller destinations to support daily commuting, said a project manager.

The line promises tangible benefits for local residents. Currently, a commuter traveling from the Suzhou South Station to the Xicen Science and Technology Innovation Center in Qingpu District of Shanghai must first take a high-speed train to the Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station, then transfer to metro or bus services, a journey exceeding one hour. After the intercity railway opens, the same trip will take less than 10 minutes with a direct connection.

Similarly, travel between downtown Shanghai and Jiashan County of Jiaxing City in Zhejiang and Wujiang District of Suzhou City in Jiangsu will be reduced to about 45 minutes.

The route passes through some of the most picturesque landscapes in the Yangtze River Delta region, while also linking emerging innovation clusters. Local authorities emphasize that the line is not merely a transportation project, but a catalyst for economic synergy, talent mobility, and balanced regional growth.
