Recovery efforts were underway in a flood-hit county in central China's Hunan Province on Saturday after several days of heavy rainfall came to an end, with local authorities working to restore normal life and resume school operations.
In Shimen County, Changde City, authorities have organized large-scale cleanup work in affected towns and villages, clearing mud and debris from streets, schools and kindergartens.
At Yingjiaya Village in Suojie Township, teachers prepared classrooms and dormitories for students to return as newly donated desks and chairs arrived on Saturday.
"We have just carried out a second round of disinfection work today (Saturday). Now our facilities including classrooms and dormitories have met safety standards for students. We expect that 9th-grade students can return to campus by Sunday afternoon, while other grades are likely to resume classes by Tuesday," said Ge Xianggang, principal of the township's central school.
Meanwhile, local governments across the county have mobilized residents to carry out post-disaster recovery work in recent days.
Water and electricity supplies are gradually being restored. Some residents whose homes were severely damaged are staying at temporary shelters, while most villagers have already returned home.
