VILNIUS, Lithuania (AP) — Lithuanian authorities are on high alert after a massive data leak involving more than 600,000 entries from national data registers, which is believed to have been executed by another country.
The Lithuanian general prosecutor’s office on Friday announced the leak was primarily from registers of real estate and legal entities accessed by using login credentials of institutions authorized to receive the data.
The head of the State Enterprise Centre of Registers, Adrijus Jusas, resigned Monday following the leak.
The authorities immediately implemented additional cybersecurity measures, including blocking the accounts of suspected data users and restricting access with a requirement to update credentials, the prosecutors said.
The prosecutor’s office said a foreign country is suspected of involvement, although authorities did not specified which nation.
Lithuanians are especially cautious given that the country, with a population of 2.9 million, is one of the main targets of Russia’s hybrid war against Europe, which includes sabotage, arson attacks and vandalism, as well as influence operations.
Opposition politician Laurynas Kasčiūnas wrote on social media Sunday that the data theft is suspected to be a Russian intelligence operation, although he offered no evidence for the claim.
The politician warned that addresses of intelligence officers, military personnel, diplomats or politicians may have been accessed, which could potentially allow the perpetrators to spy on or exercise pressure against the targets.

PARIS (AP) — Ben Shelton won an all-American matchup against Tommy Paul on Friday to reach the semifinals of the Paris Masters for the first time.
Shelton advanced with a 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 win under the roof of the Plenitude Arena after converting two of four break points. It was his third win in five meetings between the two.
The third-seeded Shelton hit 19 aces as he ended Paul's hopes of qualifying for the ATP Finals scheduled in Turin from Nov. 15-22. As a result, another American player, Frances Tiafoe, clinched his spot and will make his debut at the season-ending tournament.
“Frances has had an outstanding year. One of my best friends, and to see him make Turin for the first time is amazing,” Shelton said. “I’m super happy for him, and obviously we have had a lot of Americans competing for that spot. It’s been a big year from all of us, and it’s cool that we are all in the mix.”
There is only one singles spot up for grabs at the Finals, with top-ranked Alexander Zverev, Carlos Alcaraz, Shelton, Daniil Medvedev, Flavio Cobolli and Arthur Fils having already qualified. If Taylor Fritz defeats Alcaraz to reach the Paris Masters semifinals later Friday, he will join them in Turin. If he loses, Rafael Jodar will take part in the elite gathering instead.
It was Shelton 44th tour-level victory of the season, improving his personal-best win tally following his 42 wins in 2024.
He will next be up against either Frenchman Luca Van Assche or qualifier Rinky Hijikata.
