At least 22 people lost their lives and 36 others sustained injuries when a truck carrying recently returned Afghan refugees overturned in eastern Afghanistan's Laghman Province early Saturday, according to Afghan health officials.
The deadly accident took place in Surkhakan region, Qarghayi district, along the highway linking the capital Kabul to eastern provinces, when the driver lost control, causing the vehicle to veer off the road and overturn, according to a statement from the provincial police office.
At least 10 children and five women were among the deceased, the statement said, adding that all the injured were transferred to nearby hospitals, with several reported to be in critical condition.
Preliminary findings suggest reckless driving was the primary cause of the crash, although investigations are ongoing, said the statement.
"The journey originated in Kunar, with the passengers spending the night en route. The accident occurred after the driver fell asleep behind the wheel, causing the vehicle to collide. More than 20 people were killed, and many others sustained injuries," survivor Mohamadullah told reporters.
"Unfortunately, the truck transporting the returnees was involved in a collision on the way. The family consisted of nine brothers; tragically, one of the brothers, along with his wife and children, lost their lives in the accident. The truck was carrying the family's belongings as well as approximately 60 passengers," said witness Abdul Qodoos.
Road accidents remain one of the leading causes of death in Afghanistan due to reckless driving, overcrowded vehicles, poorly maintained highways, and inadequate traffic infrastructure across the war-ravaged country.
