High-altitude rhododendrons are now in full bloom in Menyuan Hui Autonomous County of northwest China's Qinghai Province.
Aerial views show that the mountains and fields are covered with rhododendrons, and vast expanses of purple, white, and pink flowers are standing against distant snow-capped peaks, creating a stunning landscape unique to the plateau region.
With an average elevation of over 2,800 meters, Menyuan's cool plateau climate supports diverse rhododendron communities. The flowers bloom in succession from late May to early June.
"Wild rhododendrons are a native dominant species in the Qilian Mountains and are very sensitive to their environment. In recent years, we've observed not only an expansion in their range but also improvements in flowering density and quality -- a clear sign that the regional ecosystem is continuing to improve," said Zhang Junshan, deputy head of the Xianmi Forest Farm in Menyuan.
As a key component of the plateau ecosystem, wild rhododendron thickets help conserve soil and water, while the blossoms provide essential nectar for bees, butterflies, and other pollinators, supporting biodiversity in the high-altitude ecosystem.
