Gold, silver futures drop on Wednesday

International gold and silver prices both dropped on Wednesday.

On the New York Mercantile Exchange, gold futures for August delivery fell 2.73 percent to settle at 4,016.40 U.S. dollars per ounce, while silver futures for July delivery dropped 6.73 percent to close at 57.485 dollars per ounce.

The U.S. dollar increased in late trading on Wednesday.

The dollar index, which measures the greenback against six major peers, gained 0.2 percent to 101.611 at 15:00. (1900 GMT).

In late New York trading, the euro decreased to 1.1355 dollars from 1.1379 dollars in the previous session, and the British pound fell to 1.3162 dollars from 1.3188 dollars in the previous session.

The U.S. dollar bought 161.76 Japanese yen, higher than 161.57 Japanese yen of the previous session. The U.S. dollar climbed to 0.8124 Swiss francs from 0.8100 Swiss francs, and it rose to 1.4237 Canadian dollars from 1.4214 Canadian dollars. The U.S. dollar increased to 9.7714 Swedish kronor from 9.7466 Swedish kronor.
