The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR) government held a reception on Wednesday to celebrate the 29th anniversary of Hong Kong's return to the motherland on July 1, 1997, with Chief Executive John Lee delivering a keynote speech.

In the speech, John Lee said that the prosperity of China as a whole is Hong Kong's strongest backing. Leveraging the unique advantages of the principle of One Country, Two Systems, Hong Kong, a giant ship of the Orient, will surely ride the wave of national development, forging ahead and creating an even more dazzling future, he said.

On the occasion of celebrating the 29th anniversary of Hong Kong's return, Hong Kong members of the 14th National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) said that with the joint efforts of all sectors of society, Hong Kong will definitely have a better tomorrow.

"On this important day marking the 29th anniversary of Hong Kong's return to the motherland, at this new historical juncture, I firmly believe that with the great motherland as our strong backing and the united efforts of all compatriots in Hong Kong, Hong Kong will surely be able to better integrate into the overall development of the country," said So Ching-tung, a member of the 14th CPPCC National Committee.

"For 29 years, under the guidance of the principle of One Country, Two Systems, Hong Kong has maintained long-term prosperity and stability, with a booming economy, a peaceful and harmonious society, and residents living and working in peace and contentment. In recent years, in particular, with the firm support of the central government, Hong Kong has achieved a major transformation from chaos to order, opening a new chapter of prosperity and stability. We have truly felt the new atmosphere of social stability and public cohesion," said Zhang Zuojiao, a member of the 14th CPPCC National Committee.

"The motherland is Hong Kong's greatest source of confidence and backing strength for its prosperity and stability. With the firm support of the great motherland and the solid guarantee of the principle of One Country, Two Systems, Hong Kong will surely seize the opportunity to create a new era of development and tell China's story well. The 'Pearl of the Orient' will undoubtedly shine even more brilliantly," said John Lee Chi-Kin, a member of the 14th CPPCC National Committee.
