Typhoon Maysak, the 10th typhoon of the year, made landfall on the coast of south China's Hainan Province on Friday evening, bringing torrential rains that flooded multiple roads in the coastal city of Sanya and triggered several rescue operations overnight.
The tropical storm came ashore at around 18:20 in Yelin Township of Lingshui Li Autonomous County, according to Hainan's provincial meteorological bureau. At landfall, it packed maximum winds of 23 meters per second near its center.
On Friday night, local firefighters received multiple emergency calls from stranded vehicles.
In one incident, a car carrying five people, including a child, was stranded at an intersection in Haitang District of Sanya. Firefighters rushed to the scene and pushed the vehicle out of the flooded section.
Another rescue occurred in Tianya District, where three people were trapped inside a car. As the water level had risen above the bottom edge of the doors, rescuers guided the passengers to climb out through the windows before transferring them to safe areas.
In another emergency, a man riding an electric bike was swept into a river by rushing currents while crossing an unrailed bridge at a wetland park.
Upon receiving a call from a passerby, firefighters rushed to the site, where they found the man clinging to a wooden plank in turbulent water. A rescuer then swam to the man and brought him to shore with the assistance of ground crews.
Thanks to local authorities' drainage efforts and the easing of rains, transportation on the tropical island has gradually resumed as of Saturday morning.
