South African Deputy President Paul Mashatile has hailed Chinese President Xi Jinping's Global Governance Initiative (GGI), saying the proposal is in sync with the pulse of the times.
Proposed by Xi in 2025, the GGI seeks to provide a Chinese solution to two pressing questions of the era: what kind of global governance system should be established, and how it can be reformed and improved.
In an interview with China Media Group (CMG) aired on Friday, Mashatile underscored that South Africa and China should work together to push for reforms in multilateral institutions, stressing the need for governance systems that serve people and benefit humanity.
"I support that, I think it's positive. What we need to do together, China and South Africa, is to push for the reforms of these multilateral institutions so that global governance can become real. It must be the kind of governments that serve people. And President Xi is quite right, and that's why I always insist that let's work together because there is a pushback by others at that global stage. And we who are friends must work together to ensure that we create systems that are humane, that serve humanity, that benefit people. And good global governance is very key in that regard," said Mashatile.
