U.S. dollar ticks up

The U.S. dollar increased in late trading on Tuesday.

The dollar index, which measures the greenback against six major peers, gained 0.17 percent to 101.023 at 15:00 (1900 GMT).

In late New York trading, the euro dropped to 1.1419 U.S. dollars from 1.1443 dollars in the previous session, and the British pound decreased to 1.3363 dollars from 1.3395 dollars in the previous session.

The U.S. dollar bought 161.94 Japanese yen, lower than 162.06 Japanese yen of the previous session. The U.S. dollar rose to 0.8076 Swiss francs from 0.805 Swiss francs, and it decreased to 1.4195 Canadian dollars from 1.4209 Canadian dollars. The U.S. dollar increased to 9.6784 Swedish kronor from 9.6255 Swedish kronor.

International gold and silver prices both dropped on Tuesday.

On the New York Mercantile Exchange, gold futures for August delivery fell 0.24 percent to settle at 4,157.40 U.S. dollars per ounce, while silver futures for September delivery dropped 1.60 percent to close at 61.330 dollars per ounce.
